When studying the development of the industry, we must not only see the progress and achievements made by the industry in the development, but also find out the existing problems and deficiencies in a practical and realistic manner. In terms of the industry as a whole, the internal combustion engine industry's product technology level, enterprise's technology and equipment, operation and management level, development and innovation capabilities, and personnel quality are still different from those of advanced countries in the world. The overall size of the internal combustion engine industry is large, but the levels are uneven, and products and brands that have international competitiveness have not yet emerged. There are many reasons for this, and the industry's ability to independently innovate is relatively weak. Especially in the high-tech fields, the capacity for independent innovation is severely deficient. High-tech is still dependent on foreign countries. The key core technologies and products are subject to human beings as the main obstacles to the development of the industry. Three Ways for Internal Combustion Engine Industry to Improve Independent Innovation Ability Independent innovation is an inexhaustible motive force for the development of a country and a nation. Without independent innovation, the products of a company will not be competitive in both domestic and foreign markets and will inevitably be set at a low end. In the long run, it is very likely to be marginalized and become a processing plant of a foreign company, or it will be phased out. Facts have proved that the core technology can not be bought, and the use of the market for core technology can not be replaced. The introduction of technology and the purchase of foreign equipment can not improve the ability of independent innovation. For the internal combustion engine industry to continue to develop and improve its international competitiveness, it must be determined to continue to cultivate independent innovation capabilities. At present, the internal combustion engine industry adopts the following three methods to improve its independent innovation capability. The first is to completely or substantially rely on the strength of the enterprise itself and develop new products in cooperation with institutions of higher learning and research institutes, and to nurture and improve independent innovation capabilities of enterprises in R&D. The products it develops mainly include agricultural machinery, small and medium-sized construction machinery, small and medium-sized ships, and economical passenger cars. The second way is through introduction or joint ventures, and the introduction of technology to digest and absorb new roads. It should be acknowledged that the introduction of technology or joint ventures will help improve China’s product technology, but there has been no breakthrough in improving independent innovation capabilities, especially in improving core technology innovations. The reason for this is that, first of all, foreign parties control the core technology and neither transfer the core technology nor allow Chinese technicians to participate in research and development. Second, China’s relevant departments and enterprises lacked a strategic vision, resulting in the repetition of the “introduction-backward-reintroduction†old path for quite some time. According to reports, the dependence of Chinese enterprises on foreign technology is still as high as 50%, and many products are still subject to control over high-tech core technologies. It is normal for companies to choose different ways of independent innovation according to their own conditions. Independent innovation and technology introduction are not contradictory. The technical bottlenecks in the development of modern internal combustion engine products are mainly electronically controlled combustion systems, post-discharge treatment systems, and new types of power systems.
