Recently, the silicon photonics platform of the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has completed the integration of the Platform Process Design Toolkit (PDK) with the international mainstream photonic integrated design software PhoeniX Software and Luceda Photonics IPKISS, marking the microelectronics company built a world-class silicon photonics platform.

Silicon photonics technology utilizes mature CMOS platforms and technologies and uses silicon-based materials for the development and production of optoelectronic devices and chips. This technology is one of the directions for the development of microelectronics across the world in the post-Moore era, and it is also the inevitable way for optoelectronics to move toward large-scale integration. Silicon photonics not only has urgent application requirements in the field of optical communications and optical interconnects, but also has important application prospects in the future of on-chip optical interconnects and optical computers.

The microelectronics silicon photonics platform is based on the mature 8-inch CMOS process line of the Center for Microelectronics, and is being developed in cooperation with the China Electronics 38 Institute, the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Wuhan Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. Through the silicon photonic device library design, tape-out, testing, and optimization iterations, a complete silicon photonics manufacturing process library and device library were developed, platform design rules and layers were defined, and the initial PDK content was formed. Since its release in May 2017, the platform has undertaken more than 30 units of domestic MPW tapes and custom tapes, and the device test results have reached the international advanced level, which has been highly praised by people in the industry. To further improve platform capabilities and standardize service processes, the platform recently partnered with internationally renowned photonic integrated design software vendor PhoeniX Software to integrate PDK content with its design software, and developed the IMECAS software package under PhoeniX Software. The IMECAS PDK embedded in OptoDesigner supports the most basic device connectivity. It also supports layout and simulation integration of the design environment, a variety of intelligent wiring including the Manhattan model, real-time design rule checking, and independence from specific process platforms. The design method can efficiently transfer the design based on other platforms to the microelectronics silicon photonics platform.

At the same time, the IMECAS software package under the Luceda Photonics IPKISS was developed under the leadership of the platform development partner China Electronics 38, which included design manuals, DRC scripts, and device libraries. The device library is provided in the form of a Compact Model, including the device layout, and an S-matrix model based on test data. The Caphe engine provided by the IPKISS software can be used to complete the photonic link simulation.

Based on the above technology integration, the microelectronics silicon photonics platform will provide customers with more convenient and flexible product design solutions, greatly improve the design efficiency, and help customers to quickly enter the market.
